Professional Career: British
Diplomatic Service from 1961 to 1996, including:
- Head, Economic Relations Department, Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO),
1979-1982;
- Ambassador to Zaire, Congo, Rwanda and Burundi, 1983-84;
- UK Representative to the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and
Development (OECD), Paris, 1985-88;
- Economic Director, FCO, 1988-1992;
- British High Commissioner to Canada, 1992-96.

- Chairman, Liberalisation of Trade in Services (LOTIS) Committee, British
Invisibles, 1996-2000.
- Honorary President, Canada-UK Colloquia, British Committee, 1996-2001.
